How to Pass the A Level Chemistry Practical Endorsement as an Online Learner (Easy Guide for Private Candidates)

If you’re studying A Level Chemistry online or as a private candidate, there’s one phrase that probably fills you with absolute dread: “The Practical Endorsement.”

Most students in school just complete their 12 required practicals (known as CPACs) over two years without thinking much about it. Their teacher observes them, ticks the boxes, and life moves on. But when you’re learning from home, whether you’re in Dubai, London, or anywhere else in the world, it suddenly feels like a massive, impossible hurdle. 😰

Do you actually need it? How on earth do you get it? And will it stop you from getting into Medicine?

I completely understand the panic. As an Online Chemistry Tutor, I work with private candidates every single week who are navigating this exact challenge. So let me break it down for you, everything you need to know about the Practical Endorsement as a private candidate, in plain English.

Let’s get you sorted! 🧪

1. Do You Actually Need the Practical Endorsement?

Here’s the good news first: technically, you can get an A Level Chemistry grade without the endorsement.

Your certificate will simply say “Not Classified” next to the practical element instead of “Pass.” You’ll still receive your A*, A, B, or whatever grade you earn on your written papers.

However, and this is a very big “however”, if you’re applying for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Chemistry, Pharmacy, or any lab-based degree, the vast majority of universities will require a “Pass” in the endorsement. We’re talking about 99% of competitive courses here.

If you don’t have it? They may reject your application outright, regardless of your grades.

So ask yourself: What do I want to do after A Levels? If there’s even a small chance you’ll apply for a science-related degree, I’d strongly recommend getting that Pass. It keeps all your doors open.

2. It’s a “Pass/Fail,” Not a Grade

One thing that confuses a lot of students is how the endorsement actually works. Let me clear this up for you.

The Practical Endorsement does not affect your A Level grade. It’s completely separate. You could get an A* in Chemistry and still fail the endorsement (or vice versa, though that would be unusual!).

It’s simply a certification of your hands-on laboratory skills. The assessment is based on something called the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC), and you need to demonstrate that you can:

  • Follow written procedures correctly
  • Use laboratory apparatus safely and accurately
  • Record and analyse data appropriately
  • Evaluate your results critically

You’re not being marked on getting the “right” answer. You’re being assessed on whether you can work independently in a lab environment. That’s it!

The result? Either “Pass” or “Not Classified.” No grades, no percentages, just a simple tick in the box. 🙌

3. How to Book It as a Private Candidate

Now, here’s the part that trips most online learners up: you cannot complete the Practical Endorsement at home.

I know, I know. It would be lovely if you could just film yourself doing a titration in your kitchen, but unfortunately, that’s not how it works. The direct observation requirement means a qualified teacher or authorized assessor must watch you complete each practical in person.

So what’s the solution?

You need to book with an approved exam centre. Companies like “Tutors & Exams” and “Arc Exams” in the UK specialize in exactly this. They offer what’s called “Intensive Practical Weeks” where you complete all 12 required experiments in just 4 or 5 days.

These centres have proper lab facilities, all the chemicals and equipment you need, and qualified staff to observe and sign off your competencies.

Top tip: Start researching centres now. Don’t wait until February when everyone else is panicking!

4. The Cost Factor (Let’s Talk Money 💰)

I’m not going to sugarcoat this, the Practical Endorsement costs money when you’re a private candidate.

Because you’re paying for lab space, chemicals, equipment, and a tutor’s time, these intensive weeks typically cost between £600 and £900 (approximately $750–$1100 USD). Some centres charge more, some charge less, but that’s the general ballpark.

Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely, if you need that Pass for your university applications.

Think of it as an investment in your future. You’re paying for access to facilities that school students get for free, but you’re also getting a focused, intensive experience that many students actually find incredibly valuable.

Budget for it early, and make sure you’re fully prepared before you arrive so you get maximum value from every session.

5. Why the Endorsement Actually Helps Your Written Grade

Here’s something beautiful that many students don’t realise: the skills you learn for the endorsement directly boost your exam performance. ❤️

At least 15% of the marks in your A Level Chemistry written papers come from practical-based questions. These questions test your understanding of experimental techniques, apparatus, data analysis, and error evaluation.

If you’ve actually held the pipette, performed the titration, and watched the colour change with your own eyes, those questions become ten times easier to answer. You’re not just memorising theory, you understand how it works in real life.

So even though the endorsement is “separate” from your grade, completing it genuinely makes you a better chemist and a stronger exam candidate. It’s a win-win situation!

6. Special Tips for UAE and Dubai Students 🇦🇪

If you’re searching for a Chemistry Tutor Dubai or studying online from the UAE, you’ve got some unique challenges, but also some creative solutions.

Many students in Dubai take their exams through the British Council or private international exam centres. However, lab space for private candidates can be limited in the region.

Here are your main options:

  • Find a local international school that accepts private candidates for practicals (some do, so it’s worth asking!)
  • Fly to the UK for a week to complete your CPACs in an intensive block (many of my Dubai students do this during the February half-term or Easter holidays)
  • Contact UAE-based exam centres directly to ask about CPAC arrangements, availability varies year to year

The key is to start planning early. Don’t assume you can sort this out at the last minute, because you really can’t.

7. Don’t Leave It Until May! ⏰

This is possibly the most important piece of advice I can give you: book your Practical Endorsement sessions early.

Most centres run their CPAC sessions in the Spring, February through April. By March, the best centres are often fully booked. If you wait until May, you’ll be scrambling for any available slot, potentially at a centre far from home, or worse, missing the deadline entirely.

Start researching centres right now. Email them, ask about availability, and get your name on the list.

Your future self will thank you!

8. Preparation is Absolutely Key 🔑

Walking into an intensive practical week unprepared is a recipe for stress. You’ll be completing 12 practicals in just a few days, so you need to know what you’re doing before you arrive.

Here’s my advice:

  • Watch videos of all 12 required practicals beforehand (YouTube is your friend!)
  • Know your apparatus, can you tell the difference between a volumetric flask and a conical flask? A burette and a measuring cylinder?
  • Understand the theory behind each practical so you can explain what you’re doing and why
  • Practise data analysis skills like calculating percentage errors and drawing lines of best fit

If you arrive confident and prepared, you’ll breeze through the week. If you arrive confused about basic equipment, you’ll spend the whole time stressed and playing catch-up.

You’ve Got This! 🌟

The Practical Endorsement might feel like a scary obstacle right now, but I promise you, it’s just another box to tick on your journey to that medical degree or A* grade.

Yes, it requires planning. Yes, it costs money. But it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of the A Level Chemistry experience. There’s something genuinely satisfying about completing a synthesis or seeing your titration endpoint for the first time.

Are you a private candidate or online learner feeling overwhelmed by the Practical Endorsement? Whether you’re based in the UK or searching for an A Level Chemistry Tutor from Dubai, I’d love to help you master the theory of practicals so you walk into that lab with total confidence.

Let’s get you that Pass: and that future you’ve been working so hard for!
